Mellow

Three Thai Boston University grads partnered to create their passion project. With fond memories of charming Boston 18th & 19th-century red-brick architecture of their favourite hang-outs- they asked our designers evoke a bit of New England for their laid back eatery- Mellow.

Our clients were surprised to learn that our founder, the architect David Mayer, is from Boston- and knew every street and venue the clients mentioned as inspiration. Says Mayer, ‘The cool thing about a place like Boston is that centuries-old buildings are constantly repurposed making for a great juxtaposition of new and old.”

Although it is located in the centre of one of the hottest areas for upscale nightlife in Bangkok, the existing two-storey building was without character. So our architectural team decided to strip it down to its concrete structure and create a new façade and interiors. The large, steel-framed divided lite windows reference New England mill buildings. The two-story back wall is clad in weathered red brick. The upper floor dining room has a ceiling composed of wood beams and decking- recreating the appearance of mill architecture.

With floors of exposed concrete and exposed electrical conduit- the overall ambience is that of an artists loft. What that in mind- the large brick wall has a regularly changing art exhibition, transforming the environment to keep the interest of Mellow’s loyal following of repeat customers. Furnishings are comfortable with a heavy, indestructible feel- with purposely mismatched designs except for their natural oakwood and leather finishing.

Opened in 2010- Mellow has become a landmark, like much Bostonian architecture, that only gets better with age.
